Posted on: 3/10/2003
Seminole County 4-H captured the Florida State LifeSmarts Championship by successfully fielding questions about real-life issues.
LifeSmarts, a consumer education competition that test teens in grades 9-12 about personal finance, health and safety, the environment, technology and consumer rights and responsibilities, is a program of the National Consumer’s League.
Teens from across the state first competed online for a chance to go to the in-person state finals held at the Florida State Fair.
As State champions, Seminole County 4-H has qualified for the regional and national LifeSmarts competition to be held April 26-29, 203 at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
As LifeSmarts participants in Florida, “these students have been exposed to many of the consumer “smarts” required to be successful in life,” said Charles H. Bronson, Florida’s Commissioner of Agriculture. “We are pleased to sponsor the LifeSmarts competition in Florida and are pleased that Seminole County 4-H will represent Florida in National competition,”said Bronson.
The Seminole County team is made up of Captain: John Terwilleger, Sanford; Jenna Linduff, Altamonte Springs; Sarah Bastin, Altamonte Springs; Ricky McOwen, Winter Springs and Jonathan Estry, Deltona.
“There are no losers in the LifeSmarts competition on, " said Linda Golodner, president of the National Consumer’s League, the national sponsor of LifeSmarts. “All participants win by gaining experience in avoiding common consumer pitfalls, navigating the government, and understanding credit card jargon before they sign on a dotted line.
LifeSmarts is a program of the National Consumer's League. State coordinators run the program on a volunteer basis. For more information, visit www.fl-ag.com, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org or call the National Consumers League’s communications department at 202-835-3323.
