Seminole County Fire Department
Kicks-off 3rd Phase of
“Firefighters Fitness Awareness Program”

Seminole County Fire Department is moving into its third and final phase of their grant funded wellness program. Last year the department was awarded a Federal Grant for a Wellness Awareness and Education program. The final phase includes several levels of evaluation. Orlando Regional Healthcare system (ORHS) personnel will once again be on-site screening firefighters on January 29th, 30th, & 31st. Firefighters are being screened for overall body weight/body fat percentage.

“Firefighters can compare their results from a year ago to the results they receive from this screening and make adjustments accordingly.” advised Leeanna Raw, Assistant Chief.

The first two (2) phases were conducted at the beginning of last year. The first phase included ORHS personnel screening firefighters for body weight/body fat percentage and an educational component. In addition, exercise equipment was purchased with this grant and firefighters received training on effective exercise routines with this equipment.

Seminole County Fire Officials submitted for this grant due to the number one (1) cause of line of duty deaths to firefighters being heart attacks. “We want to do everything we can to protect the health of our firefighters so they can, in turn, protect our citizens in emergency situations.” advised Terry Schenk, Seminole County Fire Chief.

“We feel very fortunate to have received this grant.” added Chief Schenk. The total Fire Grant Funding received was $42,490 with an additional 30% of matching funds from Seminole County.
